CLIMATE

A PARTICULARLY BENEFICIAL, MILDLY BRACING AND SUNNY CLIMATE

Thanks to its privileged location on a high plateau, the village of Höchenschwand is one of sunniest places in Germany - even in autumn and winter. The mildly bracing climate is similar to that of the Swiss highlands, graded between the low mountain range climate and the Alpine climate. The low atmospheric pressure has positive effects on the respiratory tract and the cardiac activity and therefore helps enhance the physical wellbeing. This is why Höchenschwand has been awarded the label "Climatic Health Resort“.

BIOSPHERE RESERVES IN THE SOUTHERN BLACK FOREST

A PLACE OF FLOURISHING WILDLIFE AND PROSPERITY

The “Black Forest” Biosphere Reserve, set up in 2016, incorporates the territories of 29 towns and villages, including the health resort of Höchenschwand.

A biosphere reserve is a specially designated area aimed at conciliating environmental issues with requirements regarding the economy, urbanism and tourism. The conservation of nature is associated with the preservation of the cultural and agricultural heritage. A biosphere reserve is divided into core areas, maintenance areas and development areas. Core and maintenance areas are designated for the conservation of wildlife, whereas development areas are aimed at ensuring a sustainable and eco-friendly economic development. What is special about the biosphere reserves is the importance of the involvement of the local population in the decision-making processes. This approach actually helps ensure that the commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly economic development finds its expression in everyday life.

It is the “Ministerium für Ländlichen Raum und Verbraucherschutz Baden-Württemberg” (Ministry for Rural Development and Consumer Protection) that designates biosphere reserves by decree. Subsequently, the sanctuary may be upgraded by a special certificate issued by the UNESCO. The Black Forest Biosphere Reserve has not yet been recognised by the UNESCO. However, a request has already been submitted to the United Nations institution.

SCHWARZAHALDEN WOODLAND

EXPERIENCE A PRISTINE WILDERNESS

What is a woodland like that is left without any management? You can find it out visiting the “Schwarzahalden” Woodland, the largest sanctuary of its kind in the State of Baden-Württemberg. Human activities are banned there: fallen trees and dead wood are not removed, the undergrowth is left to grow profusely and there is no economic exploitation. You can follow footpaths running through the woodland of 400 hectares with up to 300 year old trees, rare animals and sumptuously flourishing plants.
